Pen Show Champions Crowned at the 2015 National Western Stock Show
PARKER, Colo. -Another great year of quality pens were represented in the National Salers & Optimizer Pen Show. Inaugural to this event was the Pen Heifer show, allowing for breeders to display either a pen of Salers Heifers and/or a pen of Optimizer Heifers. The Pen show is to emphasize the commercial traits that Salers and Optimizer cattle can bring forth. The three Judge panel is provided with EPDs, Scanned Ultrasound Data, and accurate measurements to display the power of the Salers Breed.
The three judge panel consisted of Jirl Buck, Madill, Okla., Jimmie Butler, Republic, Mo., and Dan Mosher, Manhattan, Kan. These three judges come from very diverse backgrounds and with their personal experience can pick the best Salers and Optimizer cattle in the National Pen Show.
The National Champion Salers Pen of Bulls was awarded to GG&T Cattle Co. of Quinter, Kan. They displayed a pen with the averages of 365 days of age, -0.5 BW, +55 WW, +95 YW, +26 MM, 40 scrotal, 16.37 REA, 3.30 %IMF, 0.35 Fat, 1,237 lbs and WDA of 3.39.
The Reserve National Champion Salers Pen of Bulls was exhibited by Elm Creek Ranch, Hebron, N.D. This pen is was made of bulls with an average of 348 days of age, +0.3 BW, +48 WW, +90 YW, +25 MM, 41 Scrotal, 15.24 REA, 3.39 %IMF, 0.30 Fat, 1,108 lbs, and WDA of 3.18.
GG&T Cattle Co. also exhibited the National Champion Optimizer Pen of Bulls. This was a pen made up of bulls averaging 1,297 lbs, WDA of 3.47, 373 days of age, +0.3 BW,+54 WW, +96 YW, +19 MM, 42 scrotal, 17.85 REA, 3.36 %IMF, and 0.38 Fat.
MJB Ranch of Lodge Grass, Mont. exhibited the Reserve National Champion Optimizer Pen of Bulls. This pen had an average weight of 1,091 lbs, WDA of 3.37, +1.2 BW, +49 WW, +96 YW, +19 MM, 38 scrotal, 14.92 REA, 3.58 %IMF, 0.33 fat and 324 days of age.
The Inagural National Champion Salers Pen of Heifers went to Rowell Cattle Co. of Ninneka, Okla. This was a pen of heifers with an average of 343 days of age as well as an average weight of 893 pounds, WDA of 2.60, +1.6 BW, +48 WW, +97 YW, +20 MM, 13.52 REA, 3.38 %IMF, and 0.39 fat.
The Reserve National Champion Salers Heifer Pen had an average weight of 740 lbs, WDA 2.66, 278 days of age, +1.6 BW, +44 WW, +80 YW, +23 MM, 11.67 REA, 3.27 %IMF, and 0.31 fat. This pen was exhibited by Rob Bodine of Voltaire, ND.
Dixon Cattle Co. LLC of Benkelman, Neb. exhibited the Inaugural National Champion Optimizer Pen of Heifers. This pen included three heifers with averages of 316 days of age, 800 lbs, 2.53 WDA, +1.2 BW, +40 WW, +80 YW, +12 MM, 11.30 REA, 3.76 %IMF, and 0.35 fat.
